This October marks Birmingham Hippodrome’s 125th anniversary as a leading performing arts venue, which began as The Tower of Varieties circus back in 1899. To mark the occasion, there is currently an exhibition spanning all floors of the theatre, celebrating the changing face of the building and some of our favourite moments in pantomime, musicals, new work, and dance. The exhibition has been lovingly curated by Sophie Lewis, Birmingham Hippodrome’s Heritage Coordinator.

With so much to cover in our 125-year history, each floor of the building has a dedicated exhibition. In the foyer as you enter the building at both the Hurst St and Thorp St entrances you will find a timeline spanning out 125-year history. On Level 1 you can find images pantomime throughout the years, including production shots of our last 12 pantomimes. Level 2 brings you the history of our building over time and a look back at musical productions that have visited our stage. On Level 3 visitors can explore dance and the many shows of Birmingham Royal Ballet and outside our Artists’ Lounge you can see posters from our in-house, produced work.

Visitors to matinee or evening shows in the main house and Patrick Studio are welcome to come and share these fantastic moments from over the years. The free exhibition will run until the end of the year so please do come along and take it all in.
