A History of Black Representation on stage at Birmingham Hippodrome

Within 12 months of opening, on 24 September 1900, Johnny Richardson, the first black performer at Birmingham Hippodrome took to our stage.

The intervening years have seen at least 92 further black-led acts take to the Hippodrome’s stage.

In 2019, the year we celebrate our 120th birthday and co-produce a brand new production of The Color Purple, we are delighted to present this heritage exhibition that announces and celebrates the long history of black representation on our stage.
