Birmingham celebrates B-SIDE Hip-Hop Festival 2024
Birmingham Hippodrome welcomed tens of thousands of people to B-SIDE Hip-Hop Festival 2024 this June, celebrating dance and culture in the city.
From Thursday 6 June to Sunday 10 June, the free annual festival brought together exceptional artists and acts from the four main elements of hip-hop: breakin’, graffiti, DJ’ing and MC’ing and featured unmissable performances, workshops and activities across the city.
B-SIDE Hip-Hop Festival 2024 launched on Thursday 6 June with the Hippodrome’s Young Advocates’ community drop-in event, which featured break dance and cypher workshops led by local artists.
Friday evening saw Birmingham Hippodrome host the sold-out premiere of Juice Aleem’s 40 Out of 50: A Birmingham Hip-Hop Story followed by a Q&A with audiences and a viewing of Tones, a 1 hour rap by Gerel Falconer.
The festivities continued across the city over the weekend, with dancing qualifiers, kids graffiti workshops, Fluxcon creatives marketplace, talks, zine making, workshops, a basketball hangout on Hurst Street and Street Sounds Radio block party on Thorp Street.
Break Mission’s Breakin’ and All Style Dance Championships and Queer-Side’s Dance Championship made a fantastic return to the city, with hundreds of competitors from China, Taiwan, Norway, Finland, Canada, USA, Australia, Costa Rica, Bulgaria, The Netherlands France, Spain, Italy and the UK battling it out at the qualifiers on Hippodrome Square and main stage. On the final day of the competitions showcases from Marshon Dance, Xi Studio & Rare Collective wowed audiences in The Bullring.
The dancers were accompanied by international DJs and judges throughout the weekend. The championships came to a spectacular close on Sunday with the grand finals taking place at Bullring & Grand Central.
B-SIDE Hip-Hop Festival was produced by Birmingham Hippodrome with Break Mission, Queer-Side, Afroflux and High Vis Festival. The festival is in partnership with Bullring & Grand Central and supported by Red Bull, Zambrero, Southside District, The Arcadian and Street Sounds Radio B-Side Official Radio Partner.
