Motionhouse perform WILD in Hippodrome Square
Find out what it is to be WILD in Hippodrome Square with Birmingham Hippodrome Associate Company Motionhouse on Saturday 29 June. The free performance takes place from 6.30pm outside the main entrance of Birmingham Hippodrome.
WILD, a co-commission with the Birmingham Hippodrome seen previously at the Bullring in March, is a new dance-circus production that explores how societies disconnect with the natural environment and asks in our increasingly urban lives, is the wild still shaping our behaviour?
WILD creates an urban forest in the everyday location of Hippodrome Square through a forest of poles. Using the powerful physicality distinctive to Motionhouse and combining dynamic choreography, acrobatic movement and hand-to-hand partnering, WILD is a juxtaposition of the complex relationships in the forest and the more atomised life of humans in the city.
Chris Sudworth, Director of Artistic Programming said: “WILD had a fantastic reception when it appeared at the Bullring so we are delighted to be working with our Hippodrome Associates Motionhouse to bring it back as a free performance in the square outside the front of Birmingham Hippodrome. Our Associates make top quality, bold and dynamic performances that are made in the Midlands, and tour nationally and internationally, so we are delighted to bring this free dance-circus performance from a world-class company to the streets of Southside.”
Louise Richards, Executive Director of Motionhouse said: “We love sharing our work with our local audiences in Birmingham, so we’re excited to be bringing Wild to the Hippodrome Square in partnership with the wonderful Birmingham Hippodrome. We do hope lots of people will come out and watch us perform!”
WILD is commissioned by Gulbenkian & ART31 and Birmingham Hippodrome (as part of the Hippodrome Associate Artist programme). Supported by Without Walls with commissioning from Freedom Festival, Hat Fair, and Out There International Festival of Circus & Street Arts. With additional backing from the Garfield Weston Foundation, the Foyle Foundation, The 29th May 1961 Charitable Trust the Saintbury Trust and The City of London Corporation.
The performance lasts approx. 45 minutes.
Please note that the Birmingham Hippodrome building itself will be closed on Saturday 29 June for a private event, so please make use of the neighbouring bars, restaurants and facilities of Southside.
