From Buenos Aires to Birmingham - EVITA treats shoppers to surprise performance!
After 10 years in the UK and two West End seasons, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical masterpiece, Evita, will return to Birmingham Hippodrome as part of a major new International and UK tour from Tues 20 – Sat 24 Mar.
To celebrate the show’s arrival in the city, musical theatre star and West End leading lady Madalena Alberto took time away from her busy performance schedule to recreate Eva Peron’s iconic address from the balcony of the Casa Rosada in the heart of Birmingham City Centre with an exclusive live rendition of ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina’ performed in full costume from the balcony of Birmingham City Council House on Tues 20 March.

Considered as one of the West End’s prominent leading ladies, Madalena is renowned for some of the most coveted roles in musical theatre, including Fantine in Les Miserábles (25th Anniversary Tour, The Barbican, 02 Arena), Grizabella in Cats (London Palladium) and the title role in Piaf (Leicester Curve). Her most recent credits include The Ghost of Christmas Past in A Christmas Carol (Lyceum Theatre), Polly in Pollyanna (Tristan Bates Theatre) and a guest lead in BBC’s Holby City. Alongside her acting career, Madalena is a songwriter and performs solo concerts regularly.
Telling the story of Eva Perón, wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Perón, Evita follows Eva’s journey, which ultimately led her to be heralded as the ‘spiritual leader of the nation’ by the Argentine people.
With more than 20 major awards to its credit, an Oscar winning film version starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas, and featuring some of the best loved songs in musical theatre, including Don’t Cry for Me Argentina, On This Night of a Thousand Stars, You Must Love Me, and Another Suitcase in Another Hall; Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s extraordinary musical Evita is an iconic classic not to be missed!

We saw this show in London, years ago. So pleased that we decided to book last minute tickets this time.
The entire performance was amazing, including the signing lady who although neither of us are deaf, gave such life and passion to the words. . Difficult to single out any one performance, from Eva’s elegance and power , Che’s amazing voice and stage presence
and Peron’s fabulous understated ruthlessness.
The company as a whole were slick and really watchable.
Also the staff at the Hippodrome, from the lady on the phone, who managed to find me easily accessible seats to all the smiley people around the theatre.
If you get the chance to see this, don’t miss it. Many thanks from two very happy people.
